Hard Water & Residue — Common Questions

What is this bar made from?

The Lavender Locks Shampoo Bar is a hot-process natural soap made from saponified plant oils — coconut, olive, shea butter, cocoa butter, and apricot kernel oil — with lavender essential oil for fragrance. It is 100% vegan with no synthetic detergents, sulphates, or silicones.

Why might my hair feel waxy or tight?

Natural soap bars react with calcium and magnesium minerals in hard water to form a film that can sit on the hair shaft.  This can cause a waxy or tight feeling, especially on fine or low-porosity hair.  This is a natural chemistry reaction — not a product defect. Because this bar is lighter and less conditioning than the Super Moisturising Bar, it is more likely to work well right away in areas with moderately soft water.

How can I reduce or remove residue?

  • Apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse:  Mix 1–2 tablespoons of ACV in about 500 ml of water, pour through hair after washing, leave for 1–2 minutes, then rinse with cool water.  This neutralises soap alkalinity and dissolves mineral build-up.
  • Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water:  Spend more time rinsing than you think is necessary, working the water through to the roots.
  • Filtered or rain water:  Rinsing with softer water — filtered, bottled, or collected rain water — can significantly reduce waxy build-up in hard-water areas.
  • Shower-head water filter:  A mineral-reducing shower filter is a longer-term solution that benefits all natural hair care products.

Is there a transition period?

When switching from conventional shampoo, many people experience 2–4 weeks of adjustment as the scalp rebalances its natural oil production.   An ACV rinse used regularly during this period usually shortens the transition and removes build-up.

When should I stop using the bar?

Stop use if you experience persistent scalp irritation, redness, or any sign of an allergic reaction.  Check the full ingredient list if you have known sensitivities to tree-nut derived oils or lavender.
