Each July, millions around the world take up the Plastic Free challenge—reassessing the role plastic plays in their lives and finding ways to opt out.  But here at Dirty Hippie, we like to think of this month not just as a challenge, but as a reminder: we vote with every dollar we spend.  And our purchasing decisions have the power to shift systems.

🛒 The Hidden Cost of Convenience

Personal care products are some of the worst offenders when it comes to unnecessary plastic.  A single container of face cream might come wrapped in shrink film, housed in a plastic tub, and boxed in plastic-coated cardboard.  Once that cream is gone, what remains is landfill that outlasts generations.

Choosing mainstream products often means choosing waste—waste that’s hard to avoid unless you actively look elsewhere.

🌍 Our Packaging Promise

At Dirty Hippie, we approach packaging the same way we approach ingredients: with integrity, transparency, and care for our planet.

• ✅ Glass, aluminium, cardboard, and paper are our go-to materials.
• ♻️ All chosen for their recyclability, reusability, or compostability.
• 🙋 We’re upfront about the bits we haven’t solved yet—plastic mist nozzles and drip caps are currently without viable alternatives, but we’re on the lookout.

Three years ago, we also introduced soft plastics recycling into our personal routine.  The shift was startling: instead of putting out a bag of rubbish each week, we now only need one every three weeks.  That’s a big change sparked by small, consistent choices.

Refusing single-use plastic isn’t about aiming for perfection, it’s about asking questions. “Do I need this?”  “Is there a better version of this?”  “What will happen to this when I’m done with it?”
